Isla (Senglea) Tiny but Full of Character
Senglea (L-Isla): Discover One of Malta's Most Beautiful Hidden Viewpoints.
When people plan a trip to Malta, destinations like Valletta, Mdina and the Blue Lagoon often steal the spotlight. Yet, just across the Grand Harbour lies a tiny fortified city that quietly offers some of the most spectacular views on the island.
Welcome to Senglea, also known by it's Maltese name, L-Isla.
Although it is the smallest of Malta's Three Cities, Senglea is full of charm, fascinating history and breathtaking scenery. It's peaceful streets, colorful balconies, beautiful waterfront and famous Gardjola Gardens make it a destination that deserves far more attention than it receives.
This is Part 3 of my Three Cities series. If you haven't already, be sure to read my previous guides introducing the Three Cities and exploring the historic city of Birgu before continuing your journey.
Where Is Senglea?
Senglea sits on a narrow peninsula in the heart of the Grand Harbour, surrounded by water on almost every side.
It is one of Malta's famous Three Cities, together with Birgu (Vittoriosa) and Cospicua (Bormla). Thanks to its strategic position, Senglea has played an important role in Malta's history for centuries.
Today, it remains one of the island's quietest and most authentic places to visit, making it perfect for travellers who enjoy exploring beyond the usual tourist attractions.
Why Is It Called Senglea?
The city takes its English name from Grand Master Claude de la Sengle, who ordered the construction of its impressive fortifications during the 16th century.
Its Maltese name, L-Isla, simply means "The Island," referring to the narrow peninsula on which the city stands.
The combination of strong defensive walls and its location surrounded by the sea made Senglea one of the most important defensive positions in the Grand Harbour.
Senglea and the Great Siege of 1565
Like neighboring Birgu, Senglea played a crucial role during the Great Siege of 1565.
When the Ottoman Empire attempted to conquer Malta, Senglea found itself under constant attack.
Despite months of intense fighting, the defenders successfully protected the city alongside the Knights of St. John and the Maltese people.
Their courage helped change the course of Mediterranean history and secured Malta's future.
Today, as you walk through the peaceful streets, it's almost impossible to imagine the dramatic events that once unfolded here.
Gardjola Gardens One of Malta's Best Views
If there's one place you simply cannot miss, it's Gardjola Gardens.
Perched at the tip of the peninsula, these peaceful gardens offer one of the finest panoramic views in Malta.
From here you can admire:
• Valletta's impressive skyline
• Fort St. Angelo
• The Grand Harbour
• Historic fortifications
• Ships entering one of Europe's finest natural harbours
Whether you visit during the morning, afternoon or sunset, the views are simply unforgettable.
If you're a photographer, this is one of the best locations on the island for capturing Malta's unique beauty.
The Famous Gardjola Watchtower
Standing proudly within the gardens is the iconic Gardjola Watchtower.
Built in the 16th century, the tower is famous for the carved stone figures decorating its corners.
You'll notice:
π️ An eye – symbolizing constant watchfulness.
π An ear – listening for approaching danger.
πͺ½ A pelican – representing sacrifice and protection.
These symbols reminded guards that they should always remain alert while defending the Grand Harbour.
Today, the watchtower has become one of the most photographed landmarks in the Three Cities.
Exploring Senglea's Quiet Streets
The city is filled with narrow limestone streets, colorful balconies, charming doorways and peaceful little squares where everyday Maltese life continues much as it has for generations.
Unlike some of Malta's busier attractions, Senglea feels wonderfully relaxed.
You'll often hear church bells ringing, locals chatting outside their homes and fishing boats gently moving in the harbour.
It's the perfect place to slow down and appreciate Malta's authentic character.
The Waterfront
After exploring the historic streets, make your way to Senglea's waterfront.
The promenade offers beautiful views across the harbour towards Birgu and Valletta.
It's a wonderful place to stop for a coffee, enjoy lunch or simply watch boats passing through one of the Mediterranean's most historic harbours.
During the evening, the reflections of the historic buildings dancing across the water create a truly magical atmosphere.
