Discovering Marsaxlokk: Malta’s Colorful Fishing Village
If there’s one place in Malta that captures the island’s traditional soul, it’s Marsaxlokk. This charming fishing village feels like stepping into a postcard colorful boats floating gently in the harbour, fishermen preparing for the day ahead and the smell of fresh seafood drifting through the waterfront promenade.
Marsaxlokk is one of those places that instantly slows you down. Life here moves at a different pace, shaped by the sea, the seasons and generations of fishing traditions that are still alive today.
⚓A Village Built Around the Sea
Marsaxlokk sits on Malta’s southeastern coast and has been an important fishing harbour for centuries. In fact, its name comes from the Arabic word marsa meaning “harbour” and xlokk, the southeast wind that blows across the bay.
What makes the village instantly recognizable are the famous luzzus traditional Maltese fishing boats painted in bright blues, yellows, reds and greens. Many of them feature the iconic Eye of Osiris painted on the bow, an ancient symbol believed to protect fishermen at sea.

For many Maltese families a Sunday trip to Marsaxlokk is a tradition: arrive early stroll through the market, then sit down for a long seafood lunch by the harbour.

⛵ The Story Behind the Luzzu
No visit to Marsaxlokk would be complete without learning about the village's most famous symbol the traditional Maltese luzzu.
These brightly painted fishing boats have become one of the most recognizable images of Malta, appearing on postcards, travel guides and social media posts around the world. Their vibrant colors of blue, yellow, red and green make them impossible to miss as they bob gently in Marsaxlokk's harbour.
What makes the luzzu truly unique is the pair of eyes painted on the bow. Known as the Eye of Osiris or the Eye of Horus, this ancient symbol dates back thousands of years and is believed to have been passed down through the Phoenicians. Traditionally fishermen painted these eyes on their boats to protect them while at sea and to bring good fortune on their fishing journeys.
Although modern fishing methods have evolved over the years many fishermen still use luzzus today, helping to preserve an important part of Malta's maritime heritage. For locals, these boats are much more than a tourist attraction they represent generations of hard work, tradition and a deep connection to the sea.

Marsaxlokk is also one of the best places in Malta to enjoy fresh seafood. The restaurants along the promenade serve everything from grilled fish and octopus to traditional Maltese dishes like "lampuki" when in season (between end of August all the way to beginning/mid October).
Even if you’re not planning a full meal simply sitting by the harbour with a coffee or gelato while watching the boats come and go is part of the experience.
And don’t leave too early the sunsets over the bay can be absolutely stunning, especially in the warmer months.

Marsaxlokk also makes a great base for exploring the surrounding area. Just a few minutes away you’ll find:
St. Peter’s Pool – a natural rocky swimming spot famous for its crystal-clear water and cliff jumping.
Delimara Peninsula – offering scenic coastal walks and dramatic sea views.
Pretty Bay in Birżebbuġa – a sandy beach perfect for a more relaxed swim nearby.
So even though Marsaxlokk is a small village, it’s easy to turn the visit into a full day trip.
