Cospicua (Bormla): Discover the Largest City of Malta's Three Cities

Discover Cospicua (Bormla), the largest of Malta's Three Cities. Learn about its maritime history, the Cottonera Lines, waterfront, top attractions, local traditions and travel tips in this complete visitor's guide.

After exploring the medieval streets of Birgu and enjoying the breathtaking harbour views from Senglea, it's time to visit the final city in our journey through Malta's famous Three Cities.

Welcome to Cospicua, or Bormla as it's known in Maltese.

Often overshadowed by its neighbouring cities, Cospicua is the largest of the Three Cities and one of Malta's most authentic destinations. Rich in maritime history, surrounded by impressive fortifications and home to a welcoming local community, it offers visitors the chance to experience a quieter side of Malta while discovering centuries of fascinating stories.

This is the final article in my Three Cities series. If you haven't already read the previous guides, I highly recommend starting with the introduction before exploring Birgu, Senglea and now Cospicua.

Where Is Cospicua?

Cospicua is located on the southern side of the magnificent Grand Harbour and forms part of Malta's famous Three Cities, alongside Birgu (Vittoriosa) and Senglea (L-Isla).

Unlike its neighbours, Cospicua stretches further inland, making it the largest of the three historic cities.

Its central location also makes it an excellent base for exploring the entire Cottonera area on foot.

Within just a few minutes, you can easily walk between all three cities while enjoying some of the oldest streets in Malta.

Why Is It Called Cospicua?

The Maltese name Bormla is believed to come from the word Burmola, referring to the area's natural springs.

The English name Cospicua was later given by Grand Master Marc'Antonio Zondadari in recognition of the city's strength and importance after years of rebuilding and defending Malta.

Today, locals commonly refer to the city simply as Bormla, preserving its deep connection to Maltese heritage.

A City Shaped by the Sea

For centuries, Cospicua has been closely connected to the sea.

Its location beside the Grand Harbour made it a natural center for shipbuilding, trade and naval activity.

Throughout Malta's history, thousands of sailors, dockyard workers and merchants passed through its streets, helping shape the city's unique character.

Even today, you can still feel this maritime heritage while walking along the waterfront, where modern yachts share the harbour with traditional Maltese boats.

The Cottonera Lines

One of Cospicua's most impressive features is the Cottonera Lines.

These enormous defensive walls were built by the Knights of St. John during the 17th century to strengthen the protection of the Three Cities following the Great Siege of 1565.

Although not all sections were completed as originally planned, the surviving fortifications remain among the largest military engineering projects ever undertaken in Malta.

Walking alongside these walls offers a fascinating glimpse into the island's military history while also providing excellent viewpoints over the surrounding area.

Churches and Local Traditions

Like many Maltese towns and villages, Cospicua has a strong sense of community.

The city's skyline is dominated by the magnificent Immaculate Conception Parish Church, which has long been an important religious and cultural centre.

Throughout the year, local festas bring the streets to life with colourful decorations, band marches, fireworks and celebrations that showcase the warm spirit of the local community.

If you're lucky enough to visit during festa season, you'll experience one of Malta's most beloved traditions.

Walking Through Cospicua

One of the best ways to experience Cospicua is simply by wandering.

You'll discover quiet residential streets lined with traditional limestone houses, colourful wooden balconies and charming doorways that reflect centuries of Maltese architecture.

Unlike some of the island's busiest destinations, Cospicua feels refreshingly authentic.

Here you'll see locals chatting outside cafés, neighbors greeting one another and children playing in small squares a reminder that this isn't just a historic attraction, but a living community.

The Waterfront

The regenerated waterfront has become one of Cospicua's highlights.

It's a lovely place for a leisurely stroll, especially in the evening when the lights from the surrounding cities reflect across the calm waters of the Grand Harbour.

You'll also find cafés and restaurants where you can sit back, enjoy a meal and watch boats gently pass by.

It's the perfect place to end a day exploring the Three Cities.
