The Three Cities of Malta: Everything You Need to Know Before You Visit
The Three Cities of Malta: A Journey Through the Island's Oldest Cities
Discover Malta's historic Three Cities: Birgu, Senglea and Cospicua. Learn their fascinating history, how to visit and why they're one of Malta's most underrated attractions.
If you're planning a trip to Malta chances are Valletta is already on your itinerary. But just across the Grand Harbour lies one of the island's most fascinating destinations one that many visitors completely overlook.
Welcome to the Three Cities.
Made up of Birgu (Vittoriosa), Senglea (L-Isla) and Cospicua (Bormla), these fortified cities are older than Valletta and are where Malta's story truly began. Rich in history, stunning architecture and authentic local charm, the Three Cities offer a completely different side of Malta that deserves a place on every travel itinerary.
This is the first article in my new four-part series, where we'll explore each city in detail and uncover why the Three Cities are among Malta's greatest visit.
What Are the Three Cities?
Together, they represent one of the oldest inhabited areas in Malta and have played a crucial role in shaping the country's history for centuries.
Long before Valletta became Malta's capital, Birgu served as the headquarters of the Knights of St. John after they arrived on the island in 1530. From here, they strengthened Malta's defenses and prepared for one of the most important events in European history, the Great Siege of 1565.
Today, walking through the Three Cities feels like stepping into a living museum. Narrow limestone streets, impressive fortifications, hidden courtyards, traditional balconies and spectacular harbour views make every corner worth exploring.
Why You Should Visit the Three Cities
While Valletta is vibrant and busy the Three Cities offer a slower, more authentic experience. You'll often find quiet streets, friendly locals, traditional cafés and beautiful waterfront promenades where you can simply relax and enjoy the surroundings.
History lovers will appreciate the centuries of stories hidden within the walls, while photographers will love the charming alleyways, colorful Maltese balconies, historic churches and panoramic views across the Grand Harbour.
Whether you're visiting Malta for a weekend or a longer holiday, the Three Cities provide an experience that feels both authentic and unforgettable.
A Brief History of the Three Cities
The origins of the Three Cities stretch back hundreds of years, but their importance grew dramatically after the arrival of the Knights of St. John.
Recognising the strategic importance of the Grand Harbour, the Knights established their headquarters in Birgu and strengthened the surrounding fortifications.
During the Great Siege of 1565, Birgu and Senglea became the heart of Malta's resistance against the Ottoman Empire. Despite being heavily outnumbered, the defenders successfully held the cities, changing the course of Mediterranean history.
Following the siege, the Knights decided to build a new fortified capital on the opposite peninsula. That city became Valletta.
Even after the capital moved, the Three Cities remained vital centers for trade, shipbuilding and maritime life roles they continued to play for centuries.
How to Get to the Three Cities
Reaching the Three Cities is surprisingly easy.
One of the most enjoyable ways to visit is by taking the ferry from Valletta across the Grand Harbour. The journey only takes a few minutes and offers some of the most beautiful views of Malta's skyline.
You can also travel by bus, taxi, or car, with several parking areas available nearby.
Once you arrive, the best way to explore is on foot. The cities are connected, allowing you to wander between them while discovering hidden streets, historic landmarks and scenic viewpoints along the way.
