Birgu (Vittoriosa) Discover Malta's First Capital and the Heart of the Three Cities

Explore Birgu (Vittoriosa), Malta's first capital. Discover its fascinating history, Fort St. Angelo, the Great Siege of 1565, the beautiful marina, and the best things to see and do.

When most people think about Malta's history, they immediately picture Valletta. But before Malta's famous capital existed, another city stood at the center of everything.

Welcome to Birgu, also known as Vittoriosa one of Malta's oldest and most fascinating cities.

From medieval streets and impressive fortifications to beautiful waterfront views and centuries of remarkable history, Birgu offers an experience unlike anywhere else on the island. If you're looking to discover the authentic side of Malta, this is a place you simply can't miss.

This is Part 2 of my Three Cities series. If you haven't already read the introduction, I recommend starting there before continuing your journey through Malta's historic harbour cities.

Where Is Birgu?

Birgu is one of Malta's famous Three Cities, located on a narrow peninsula overlooking the magnificent Grand Harbour, directly opposite Valletta.

Today, it forms part of the Cottonera region alongside Senglea and Cospicua, but for centuries Birgu stood as one of the island's most important settlements.

Despite being only a short ferry ride from Valletta, many visitors overlook Birgu completely a mistake that means missing one of Malta's greatest historical treasures.

Why Is Birgu So Important?

Birgu's importance stretches back long before the arrival of the Knights of St. John.

Thanks to its naturally protected harbour, the city became an ideal location for trade, defense and maritime activity.

Everything changed in 1530 when the Knights of St. John were granted Malta by Emperor Charles V. Rather than settling elsewhere on the island, they chose Birgu as their headquarters.

For more than 40 years Birgu served as Malta's capital, becoming the political, military and cultural center of the island.

Walking through Birgu today means following in the footsteps of knights, sailors, merchants and generations of Maltese who helped shape the country's history.

The Great Siege of 1565

One of the most significant moments in Birgu's history came during the Great Siege of 1565.

The Ottoman Empire launched a massive invasion in an attempt to capture Malta and gain control of the central Mediterranean.

Birgu became one of the main targets.

For months, the Knights of St. John and the Maltese population defended the city against overwhelming odds. The fighting was fierce, with attacks taking place almost daily around the fortifications.

Against all expectations, the defenders held their ground.

Their victory became one of the defining moments in European history and is still celebrated in Malta today.

Without Birgu's determination Malta and perhaps even the Mediterranean could have had a very different future.

Fort St. Angelo The Guardian of the Grand Harbour

No visit to Birgu is complete without exploring Fort St. Angelo.

Standing proudly at the tip of the peninsula, this impressive fortress has watched over the Grand Harbour for more than 800 years.

Originally built during medieval times, later became the headquarters of the Knights and played a vital role during the Great Siege.

Today visitors can walk along its bastions, explore its historic rooms and enjoy breathtaking panoramic views across Valletta, Senglea and the Grand Harbour.

It's one of the best places in Malta to appreciate just how strategically important this harbour has always been.

Wandering Through Birgu's Streets

One of Birgu's greatest attractions isn't a museum or a monument it's simply walking through the city itself.

The narrow limestone streets twist between beautifully preserved buildings, colorful wooden balconies and traditional Maltese doorways.

Every corner reveals another hidden alley, peaceful square or historic building waiting to be discovered.

Unlike some of Malta's tourist destinations, Birgu still feels wonderfully authentic. Local residents greet each other in the streets, flowers decorate balconies, and small cafés invite visitors to slow down and enjoy the atmosphere.

It's the kind of place where getting lost is part of the experience.

The Beautiful Birgu Marina

After exploring the historic center, make your way to Birgu's marina.

Here, centuries of history meet modern luxury.

Traditional Maltese boats share the waterfront with elegant yachts, while cafés and restaurants line the promenade.

It's the perfect place to enjoy a coffee, lunch or evening meal while taking in spectacular views across the harbour towards Valletta.

As the sun begins to set, the marina becomes one of the most beautiful spots on the island with historic buildings glowing in the warm Mediterranean light.
